The Mekong Clean-Up
Shall we…? ใช้ชวนทำกิจกรรม ส่วน Could you…? มักขอความช่วยเหลือ อย่าตอบเพียง Yes, I could เพราะคนถามต้องการให้ช่วยจริง การเสนอภาพสมมติใช้ If + past, would + verb เช่น If we collected the data, we would understand the problem better
I see your point, but we also need to consider the cost.
- Question–Response:
- Short conversations:
- Long conversations:
- Text completion:
- Reading comprehension:
1 · "Are you here for the river clean-up?"
Yes, my school group signed up last week.

Part 1A · Question–Response: On the riverbank
Ploy, a Grade 11 student from Nong Khai, spends Saturday at a clean-up on the Mekong. Choose the most appropriate response to each line she hears or says.
1 “Are you here for the river clean-up?”
2 “Could you pass me another pair of gloves?”
3 “How much rubbish have we collected so far?”
4 “Do you mind if I take a few photos for the school page?”
5 “What’s the matter? You look exhausted.”
6 “Shall we take a break under that tree?”
7 “I can’t believe how much plastic ends up in the river.”
8 “Who’s in charge of the boat team?”
9 “Would you like me to drive you home after this?”
10 “We should do this every month, shouldn’t we?”
Part 1B · Short conversation 1: At the volunteer tent
Choose the best option to complete the conversation.
Mr. Somchai: Good morning! Name and school, please.
Ploy: Ploy Chantarasri, from Nong Khai Wittaya. There are twelve of us. 11
Mr. Somchai: Leave them in the tent behind me. Has everyone 12 the safety form?
Ploy: All except two. They forgot to bring theirs.
Mr. Somchai: 13 I have spare copies here, so they can fill them in now.
Part 1B · Short conversation 2: A volunteer from across the river
Choose the best option to complete the conversation.
Khamla: Hi! You’re from the Thai side, right? I came over on the morning bus from Vientiane.
Ploy: Welcome! 14
Khamla: Yes, on our side of the river we do one every rainy season. But the rubbish keeps coming back, 15.
Ploy: That’s true. The river doesn’t care about borders. 16
Khamla: I’d love that. Let’s swap contacts before we leave.
Part 1B · Short conversation 3: Counting bottles
Choose the best option to complete the conversation.
Bank: Ploy, look at this. Almost every bottle in my bag is from the same water brand.
Ploy: 17
Bank: Forty-two so far, out of about fifty. If the company 18 a deposit on its bottles, people would bring them back.
Ploy: Like in Germany? You get money back for every bottle you return.
Bank: Exactly. We could 19 our data to the company and ask them to try it here.
Ploy: Good idea, but they might ignore two teenagers. 20
Bank: True. I’ll ask Mr. Somchai to sign it too.
Part 1C · Long conversation 1: Interviewing a river scientist
Choose the best option to complete the conversation.
Ploy: Dr. Lin, thank you for talking to our school newspaper. 21
Dr. Lin: Of course. I study how fish populations in the Mekong are changing. Fishers here are catching far fewer fish than they 22 twenty years ago.
Ploy: Is plastic the main reason?
Dr. Lin: Plastic is part of it, but it isn’t the biggest factor. Dams upstream change the timing of the floods, and many fish depend on those floods 23.
Ploy: So cleaning up rubbish doesn’t really help?
Dr. Lin: 24 Clean-ups protect birds and fish from plastic, and they get young people interested in the river. But we also need to talk about how the river is managed.
Ploy: What can students like us do about something as big as dams?
Dr. Lin: More than you think. 25 Ask questions, share what you learn, and keep records like the bottle count your cousin is doing.
Part 1C · Long conversation 2: Grandmother’s memory
Choose the best option to complete the conversation.
Yai Bua: You’re home late. Did the clean-up go well?
Ploy: Very well. We collected over two hundred kilos of rubbish. 26
Yai Bua: She’s right. When I was your age, your great-grandfather 27 catch enough fish in one morning to feed the whole family.
Ploy: What happened?
Yai Bua: The floods started coming at the wrong time. 28, there were fewer fish every year, and in the end he sold his boat.
Ploy: Dr. Lin said the dams upstream change the floods. 29
Yai Bua: Nobody asked us anything. We read about it in the newspaper after it was decided.
Ploy: That’s not fair. I’m going to write about this for the school paper.
Yai Bua: 30 Just make sure you get the facts right, and let the fishers speak for themselves.
Part 2A · Text completion 1: A message from the Mekong Friends Club
Choose the best word or phrase for each gap in the text.
Mekong Clean-Up Day: Thank You!
On Saturday, more than 150 volunteers from both sides of the river 31 us for our biggest clean-up so far. Together we collected 214 kilograms of rubbish 32 a two-kilometre stretch of the riverbank.
Plastic bottles made up almost half of the total, 33 food packaging and old fishing nets. Thanks to careful counting by two young volunteers, we now know that one brand of drinking water 34 for nearly a third of all the bottles we found.
We will share these results with local businesses and ask them to 35 part in a bottle-return scheme. If you would like to help, our next meeting is on 3 August. 36 experience is necessary; all you need is a pair of gloves and a little patience. See you on the river, 37!

The River Remembers · by Ploy Chantarasri, Grade 11
My great-grandfather was a fisherman. Every morning he took his small boat out on the Mekong, and by nine o’clock he 38 home with enough fish for the whole family. Today, my grandmother says, a fisher can spend an entire day on the river and catch 39 nothing.
Last weekend I joined a clean-up of the riverbank and met Dr. Sarah Lin, a scientist who studies fish in the Mekong. She told me that plastic is a serious problem, but not the 40 one. Fish depend on floods that arrive at the right time of year, and dams far upstream have changed that timing.
What surprised me most was not the science. It was my grandmother’s answer when I asked 41 anyone had consulted the fishers before the dams were built. “Nobody asked us,” she said. “We read about it in the newspaper.”
I believe that people who depend on a river should have a voice in decisions about it. 42 we cannot stop every dam, we can at least make sure that the people who live beside the river are heard. That is why our club plans to 43 the stories of older fishers in our district. If we do not record these stories now, they 44 forever.
A clean riverbank is a good start. 45, a river that has lost its fish is still a river in trouble.
Part 2B · Reading 1: A reply from the water company
Read the text and answer the questions.
From: Customer Relations, Clear Spring Drinking Water Co.
To: Bank Chantarasri, Mekong Friends Club
Subject: Your letter about bottle waste
Dear Mr. Chantarasri,
Thank you for your letter and for the bottle count your club carried out on the Mekong riverbank in Nong Khai. We were surprised, and frankly a little embarrassed, to learn that our bottles made up nearly a third of the plastic you collected.
You suggested that we introduce a deposit of one baht per bottle, which customers would get back when they return the empty bottle to a shop. We have discussed your idea with our sales team. Our main concern is cost: shops would need space to store the returned bottles, and we would need lorries to collect them.
However, we would like to run a three-month trial in Nong Khai before making any decision. We will begin in twenty shops near the river, starting in October. If at least 60 per cent of bottles are returned during the trial, we will consider extending the scheme to other provinces.
We would also welcome your club’s help in counting bottles on the riverbank again after the trial, so that we can compare the results.
Yours sincerely,
Malee Wongsa, Customer Relations Manager

Part 2B · Reading 2: An explanatory article
Read the text and answer the questions.
The River’s Heartbeat
Scientists sometimes describe the Mekong as a river with a heartbeat. Every year the monsoon rains swell the river between June and October, and the water spreads far across the surrounding land. When the rains end, the water slowly drains away again. This yearly rise and fall, known as the flood pulse, is the engine of one of the richest freshwater fisheries in the world.
The flood pulse matters because many Mekong fish migrate. As the water rises, they swim into flooded forests and rice fields, where they find food and safe places to lay their eggs. When the water falls, young fish are carried back into the main river. If the floods arrive late, or are smaller than usual, many fish never complete this journey.
Over the past twenty years, dozens of large dams have been built on the Mekong and the rivers that flow into it. Dams store water during the wet season and release it during the dry season, which makes the river’s flow more even throughout the year. For electricity companies, this is useful. For fish, it can be disastrous, because a river with an even flow has a weaker heartbeat.
Dams also trap sediment, the fine soil that the river carries downstream. Sediment feeds the plants and tiny animals that fish eat, and it keeps the land around the river fertile. Without it, riverbanks wear away more quickly and farmland becomes less productive.
None of this means that every dam must be removed. But it does suggest that the true cost of a dam is often paid by people who live far away from it.
51 What does “the flood pulse” refer to?
52 According to paragraph 2, why do many fish swim into flooded fields and forests?
53 Why are dams useful for electricity companies?
54 In “Without it, riverbanks wear away more quickly”, the word “it” refers to …

Part 2B · Reading 3: A letter to the editor
Read the text and answer the questions.
Letter to the editor: Do not forget the people who need electricity
I read Ploy Chantarasri’s article “The River Remembers” with great interest, and I agree that fishers deserve a voice. As an engineer who has worked on energy projects in the region for fifteen years, however, I would like to add another point of view.
Millions of people in the Mekong countries still have unreliable electricity. Hospitals in some districts lose power several times a week, and many factories cannot expand because the supply is not dependable. Hydropower produces electricity without burning coal, which makes it one of the cleaner choices available. If we reject every dam, we may end up building coal plants instead, and the whole planet will pay for that.
That said, I do not believe dams should be built the way they were in the past. Modern designs can include fish passages, which allow fish to travel around the dam, and operators can release water at times that copy the natural flood pulse. These measures cost more, but they are far cheaper than losing a fishery.
What we need is not a choice between fish and electricity, but honest planning that counts both. Ploy is right that the people beside the river must be consulted. So must the patients in hospitals that need light.

Yes, my school group signed up last week.
The question checks why the person is there. The best answer confirms it and adds a relevant detail. The others repeat 'clean' or 'river' without answering.
Here you are. Mind the broken glass.
Could you pass me …? เป็นการขอให้ส่งของ คำตอบที่เป็นธรรมชาติคือ Here you are ส่วน pass the exam เป็นอีกความหมายหนึ่งของ pass
'Could you pass me …?' is a request, so the natural reply hands the thing over ('Here you are'). 'Yes, I could' treats it as a question about ability, and 'passed the exam' plays on another meaning of 'pass'.
About eighty kilos, mostly plastic bottles.
How much ถามปริมาณ ต้องตอบเป็นจำนวน ส่วน since seven ตอบ how long และ as far as the bridge ตอบ how far
'How much' asks for a quantity, so the answer must give an amount. 'Since seven' answers 'how long', and 'as far as the bridge' answers 'how far'.
Go ahead, as long as you ask before showing people's faces.
Do you mind if I …?
'Do you mind if I …?' asks for permission. 'Go ahead' gives permission, and the condition after 'as long as' shows care for other people's privacy.
I've been carrying sandbags since dawn.
What's the matter?
'What's the matter?' asks what is wrong. The answer explains why the person is so tired. 'It's made of plastic' answers 'What's it made of?', a question about matter in another sense.
Good idea. It's getting really hot.
Shall we …?
'Shall we …?' is a suggestion. The natural reply accepts it and gives a reason. 'Broken a tree' confuses 'take a break' with 'break'.
Neither can I. Most of it comes from the market upstream.
การเห็นด้วยกับประโยคปฏิเสธใช้ Neither can I หรือ Me neither ส่วน So can I ใช้กับประโยคบอกเล่า
To agree with a negative statement ('I can't believe'), English uses 'Neither can I' or 'Me neither'. 'So can I' agrees with a positive statement.
Mr. Somchai. He's the man in the yellow hat.
'Who' asks for a person, so the answer names one and helps the listener find him. The distractors play on 'charge', which also means filling a battery.
That's kind of you, but my brother is picking me up.
This is an offer. A polite refusal thanks the speaker and gives a reason. The first two options confuse who is driving, and the last is impossible because she is at the river.
Definitely. Once a year isn't enough to make a difference.
The tag question invites agreement with a suggestion. The best reply agrees and gives a reason. 'We should, didn't we?' uses a tag that does not match.
Where should we put our bags?
Mr. Somchai answers 'Leave them in the tent', so Ploy must have asked where to put something. She has already said how many students there are.
signed
Has everyone …
'Has everyone …' needs a past participle to form the present perfect: 'Has everyone signed?'. 'Been signed' would mean the people themselves were signed.
That's no problem.
He immediately offers spare copies, so he is not worried. 'Then they must go home' contradicts the solution he gives.
Have you joined a clean-up like this before?
Khamla answers 'Yes' and talks about clean-ups on her side of the river, so Ploy asked about her experience of clean-ups.
because the river carries it from both countries
Ploy replies that the river does not care about borders, which responds to the idea that rubbish travels from both countries.
Maybe our schools could work together next year.
Khamla says 'I'd love that' and suggests swapping contacts, so Ploy must have proposed working together.
Really? How many have you counted?
Bank replies with a number ('Forty-two so far'), so Ploy must have asked 'How many?'.
paid
ประโยคหลักใช้ would bring จึงเป็นเงื่อนไขแบบที่ 2 ส่วน if ต้องใช้ past simple คือ paid
The main clause uses 'would bring', so this is a second conditional about an imagined situation. The if-clause needs the past simple: 'If the company paid …'.
send
You send data to a company. The distractors sound similar but mean 'use money', 'let someone borrow' and 'make curved'.
We'd have a better chance if the whole club signed the letter.
Ploy worries about being ignored, and Bank answers by adding another signature. So she suggested making the letter stronger with more names.
Could you tell us what you study here?
Dr. Lin answers 'I study how fish populations … are changing', which describes her research.
did
twenty years ago เป็นอดีต และใช้ did แทนกริยา caught เพื่อไม่ต้องพูดซ้ำ
'Twenty years ago' refers to the past, and 'did' replaces the verb 'caught' to avoid repeating it: '… than they did (= caught) twenty years ago'.
to know when to lay their eggs
The sentence explains why the timing of floods matters to fish. Floods signal when fish should breed, which Reading 2 also describes.
I wouldn't say that.
I couldn't agree more
Dr. Lin goes on to list ways clean-ups do help, so she politely disagrees. 'I couldn't agree more' would mean strong agreement, which contradicts her next sentences.
Decisions about rivers should include the people who live beside them.
More than you think
'More than you think' introduces encouragement, and the advice that follows (ask questions, share, keep records) supports the idea that local voices matter.
But a scientist told us the fish are disappearing.
Yai Bua replies 'She's right', so Ploy must have mentioned a woman who said something true: Dr. Lin and the disappearing fish. The other options contradict 'went very well'.
used to
used to + กริยาช่องที่ 1 ใช้บอกนิสัยในอดีตที่ไม่ได้ทำแล้ว ส่วน be used to แปลว่าคุ้นเคยกับ
'Used to + verb' describes a past habit that no longer happens. 'Be used to' means 'be familiar with' and needs a noun or -ing form.
Little by little
Little by little
'Fewer fish every year' describes a slow change, so 'Little by little' fits. 'All of a sudden' would mean the change happened at once.
Did anyone ask the fishers before the dams were built?
Yai Bua answers 'Nobody asked us anything', which only fits a question about whether the fishers were consulted.
Good for you.
She supports Ploy's plan and then gives advice on doing it well. 'Good for you' expresses approval; 'Don't you dare' would forbid it.
joined
join ตามด้วยกรรมได้ทันที ส่วน participate และ take part ต้องมี in และ attend to แปลว่าดูแลจัดการ
'Join' takes a direct object: 'volunteers joined us'. 'Participate' and 'take part' need 'in', and 'attend to' means 'deal with'.
along
A riverbank is a long line, so we collect rubbish 'along' it. 'Between' needs two things, and 'among' needs a group.
followed by
'Followed by' introduces the next items in a ranking: bottles first, then packaging and nets.
accounted
'Account for' means 'make up a part of a total': one brand made up a third of the bottles.
take
สำนวนคงที่คือ take part in แปลว่าเข้าร่วม
The fixed expression is 'take part in', meaning 'participate in'.
No
'Experience' is uncountable here, and the sentence says all you need is gloves and patience, so no experience is necessary. 'Many', 'a few' and 'every' are used with countable nouns.
rain or shine
'Rain or shine' is an idiom meaning 'whatever the weather', used to promise that an event will happen anyway.
had returned
by nine o'clock
'By nine o'clock' in a past story describes an action completed before a past time, so the past perfect 'had returned' is used.
almost
'Almost nothing' means 'very nearly nothing'. 'Most nothing' and 'almost not nothing' are not correct English.
only
not the only one
'Not the only one' means there are other problems too, which matches the next sentence about floods and dams.
whether
เป็นการรายงานคำถาม yes/no จึงใช้ whether หรือ if
This is a reported yes/no question ('Had anyone consulted the fishers?'), so it needs 'whether' or 'if'.
Even if
The writer admits a limit (we cannot stop every dam) and still gives a goal. 'Even if' introduces a fact that does not change the conclusion.
collect
You 'collect' stories when you gather and record them. The distractors look and sound similar but mean 'fall down', 'fix mistakes' and 'join'.
will be lost
เรื่องเล่าเป็นสิ่งที่ถูกทำให้สูญหาย จึงใช้ future passive will be lost
The stories do not lose something; they are lost. A first conditional result uses the future passive: 'they will be lost'.
However
However
