Open Day at Isan Valley University

Would you mind explaining the application process? — Not at all. Let me show you the steps.

  1. Question–Response:
  2. Short conversations:
  3. Long conversations:
  4. Text completion:
  5. Reading comprehension:

1 · "Excuse me, is this where the campus tour starts?"

Yes, the next group leaves in ten minutes.

51 · What is the passage mainly about?

Why some first-generation students leave university and what helps them stay

Part 1A · Question–Response: Around the campus

Nok, a Grade 12 student from Udon Thani, spends the day at a university open day. Choose the most appropriate response to each line she hears or says.

1 “Excuse me, is this where the campus tour starts?”

2 “Would you mind filling in this registration form?”

3 “How long does it take to get to the engineering faculty from here?”

4 “I’m afraid the scholarship talk has been moved to Room 204.”

5 “Have you decided which faculty you’re applying to?”

6 “Could you tell me where the nearest restroom is?”

7 “Do you think the dormitory fee includes electricity?”

8 “Why don’t we grab some lunch before the next session?”

9 “Sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

10 “That was a really inspiring talk, wasn’t it?”

Part 1B · Short conversation 1: At the bus station

Nok: Good morning. I’d like a ticket to Khon Kaen on the 6:30 bus, please.

Clerk: I’m sorry, the 6:30 is 11. The next one leaves at 7:15.

Nok: Oh no. Will that get me there before nine? I have an open day at the university.

Clerk: 12 The trip takes about two hours, so you’ll arrive around 9:15.

Nok: Then I’ll miss the welcome speech. Never mind. One ticket, please.

Clerk: That’s 180 baht. 13

Nok: Yes, please. I’d like to watch the rice fields on the way.

Part 1B · Short conversation 2: At the registration desk

Choose the best option to complete the conversation.

Dan: Welcome to Open Day! Have you registered online?

Nok: Yes, I did it last week, but I 14 my confirmation email.

Dan: No problem. 15

Nok: Here’s the student card from my school.

Dan: Thanks. Here’s your badge and a campus map. The scholarship talk starts at ten, and 16.

Nok: Then I’ll head straight there. Thank you!

Part 1B · Short conversation 3: In the canteen

Choose the best option to complete the conversation.

Tee: Nok! I didn’t expect to see you here. 17

Nok: Just now. My bus was late, so I missed the welcome speech. How’s first year treating you?

Tee: Honestly, 18. The lectures are in English, and the reading never stops.

Nok: That’s exactly what I’m worried about. My English isn’t great.

Tee: Don’t let that stop you. The university runs free writing clinics, and 19.

Nok: That makes me feel better. 20

Tee: Sure. It’s on my way to the library.

Part 1C · Long conversation 1: Meeting the admissions officer

Choose the best option to complete the conversation.

Ms. Anong: Good morning. You must be here about the Rural Talent Scholarship.

Nok: Yes. I read that it covers tuition, but I’m not sure 21.

Ms. Anong: It does. Recipients get a free dormitory place for four years, plus a monthly allowance of 3,000 baht.

Nok: That would make a huge difference. My parents grow sugarcane, and 22.

Ms. Anong: That’s exactly who the scholarship is for. However, applicants need a GPAX of at least 3.00 23 a short essay.

Nok: An essay? What should it be about?

Ms. Anong: 24 We want to know how you would use your degree to help your home community.

Nok: I’d like to become a nurse and work at the district hospital near my village. There’s only one nurse there for every eight hundred people.

Ms. Anong: 25 The deadline is 30 November, so you still have time to prepare.

Part 1C · Long conversation 2: Visiting the dormitory

Choose the best option to complete the conversation.

Mrs. Pim: This is Building C, for first-year women. Each room is shared by two students.

Nok: It’s bigger than I imagined. 26

Mrs. Pim: There’s a reading room on the ground floor, open until midnight. Most students 27 there before exams.

Nok: What about the rules? My mother will definitely ask.

Mrs. Pim: The main gate closes at eleven. Guests may visit the lobby, but 28.

Nok: That sounds reasonable. 29

Mrs. Pim: Yes, a security guard is on duty all night, and I live on the ground floor myself. If anything happens, 30.

Why I Almost Didn’t Go

Last month I nearly 38 my trip to the university open day. The bus ticket cost 180 baht, which is a lot when your family lives on what the sugarcane harvest brings in. My mother told me to go 39, saying that one day of travel could change four years of my life.

She was right. Before the trip, I 40 that university was only for children from the city. I believed I would never fit in, and I was afraid my English was too weak. Then I met Tee, a girl from my old school who is now a first-year student. She admitted that the first semester had been hard, 41 she also said that almost everyone improves.

The most 42 moment came in the scholarship talk. Ms. Anong explained that the Rural Talent Scholarship exists precisely for students like me. 43 I had stayed home, I would never have known about it.

Now I am writing my essay. It is about the district hospital near my village, where one nurse has to care for hundreds of patients. I want to be the second nurse. 44 I don’t win the scholarship, I will keep applying, because the journey has already 45 the way I see my future.

Part 2B · Reading 2: A news article

Read the text and answer the questions.

The Hidden Cost of a University Place

When Thai universities talk about access, they usually mean admission: how many students from rural provinces win a place. Far less attention is paid to what happens after the first semester. A recent study by education researchers in the Northeast followed 1,200 first-generation students, the first in their families to attend university, and found that nearly one in four had left within two years.

The researchers were careful to point out that most of these students did not leave because the work was too difficult. Their grades were, on average, only slightly lower than those of their classmates. Instead, the main reasons were financial and social. Many students were spending up to a third of their monthly budget on travel home, and a large number worked evening jobs that left little time for study. Others described a feeling of not belonging, especially in classes taught in English.

The study’s most hopeful finding concerned mentoring. Students who were paired with a senior student in their first year were half as likely to drop out as those who were not. “A mentor doesn’t solve money problems,” said one of the researchers, “but a mentor helps a student see that the problems are normal and can be solved.”

Critics argue that mentoring is a cheap answer to an expensive problem, and that universities should first reduce the real costs of study, such as dormitory fees and textbooks. The researchers agree that both are needed. As one student put it in an interview, “A scholarship got me through the door. A friend kept me from walking back out.”

51 What is the passage mainly about?

52 According to the study, why did most of these students leave?

53 The phrase “first-generation students” refers to students who …

54 What can be inferred about the critics mentioned in paragraph 4?

55 What does the student’s quotation at the end suggest?

Part 2B · Reading 3: A student ambassador’s column

Read the text and answer the questions.

What I Wish I’d Known at Eighteen · by Dan Phommachan, third-year engineering student and Open Day ambassador

Three years ago I stood where many of you are standing today, holding a campus map upside down and wondering whether I had made a mistake. I was the first person from my village in Nong Khai to study engineering, and I was sure everyone else was smarter than me. Here are three things I wish someone had told me.

First, nobody expects you to understand everything in the first month. In my first calculus lecture I understood perhaps a third of what the professor said, and I spent the evening feeling like a failure. Only weeks later did I discover that most of my classmates had felt exactly the same way and had simply been too embarrassed to say so.

Second, asking for help is a skill, not a weakness. The students who did best in my year were not always the cleverest. They were the ones who went to office hours, joined study groups and emailed lecturers when they were lost. I learned this late, and my grades in the first semester show it.

Third, your background is an advantage. When our design class was asked to build a low-cost water filter, I was the only one who had actually carried water from a village well. My team’s design was not the most elegant, but it was the only one a farmer could repair with tools from the local market. We won.

So if you are worried that you don’t belong here, remember that the university needs the experience you bring. Come with your questions. Come with your accent. Just come.

56 Who is the intended audience of this column?

57 Why did Dan feel like a failure after his first calculus lecture?

58 According to Dan, which students did best in his year?

59 Why was the water filter designed by Dan’s team successful?

60 In “my grades in the first semester show it”, the word “it” refers to …

Review every item

Yes, the next group leaves in ten minutes.

A yes/no question about a place is best answered by confirming the place and adding something useful, such as the time. The other options pick up the words 'start' or 'campus' but do not answer the question.

Not at all. Do you have a pen I could borrow?

Would you mind …? ตอบรับด้วย Not at all หรือ Of course not ถ้าตอบ Yes แปลว่าไม่ยินดีทำ ตัวลวงเล่นคำ fill และ form

'Would you mind …?' is a polite request. 'Not at all' means you are happy to do it. Answering 'Yes' would mean you object, and the other options only play with the words 'fill' and 'form'.

About fifteen minutes on foot, or five on the shuttle.

How long does it take ถามระยะเวลาที่ใช้เดินทาง ส่วน Since … How long have you been …

'How long does it take …?' asks about travel time. 'Since eight o'clock' would answer 'How long have you been …?', and the other options simply repeat 'long' or 'engineering'.

Thanks for letting me know. Is that in the Science Building?

I'm afraid …

'I'm afraid …' politely introduces unwelcome news; it has nothing to do with fear. The natural reply thanks the speaker and checks the new location.

Not yet. I'm torn between nursing and public health.

torn between A and B

The question asks about a decision. 'Torn between' means unable to choose between two options, so it answers the question directly. The distractors play on 'apply' and 'faculty'.

Sure, it's just past the information desk on your left.

Could you tell me where …

An indirect question such as 'Could you tell me where …?' is a request for information, so the reply should give directions. Answering only 'Yes, I could' treats it as a question about ability.

I doubt it. Most dorms here charge for it separately.

The speaker asks for an opinion about what the fee covers. 'I doubt it' gives a negative opinion, and the second sentence gives the reason for it.

Good idea. The canteen near the library is cheap.

Why don't we …? Because

'Why don't we …?' is a suggestion, not a request for a reason, so the natural reply accepts or declines it. Starting with 'Because' wrongly treats it as a real why-question.

It's Nok. Nok Saengdao, from Udon Thani.

didn't catch your name

'I didn't catch your name' means the listener did not hear it clearly. The polite response is simply to say your name again.

It was. I never knew so many scholarships existed.

A question tag like 'wasn't it?' invites agreement. The best reply agrees and gives a reason. The last option answers with another question about the place, not an opinion.

fully booked

The clerk apologises and offers a later bus, so the 6:30 must have no seats left. 'Fully booked' means every seat has been sold.

I'm afraid not.

รถถึงประมาณ 9:15 ซึ่งเลยเก้าโมง คำตอบจึงเป็นปฏิเสธ I'm afraid not คือการตอบว่าไม่อย่างสุภาพ ส่วน I'm afraid so แปลว่าใช่

The bus arrives around 9:15, which is after nine, so the answer to 'Will that get me there before nine?' is no. 'I'm afraid not' is a polite way to say no to something the listener hopes for.

Would you like a window seat?

Nok answers 'Yes, please' and wants to watch the rice fields, so the clerk must have offered a window seat. She has already bought the ticket and said where she is going.

can't find

Nok is talking about a problem right now: she does not have the email with her. 'Can't find' describes a present inability. 'Didn't find out' means 'didn't discover information', which changes the meaning.

I can look you up with your school ID.

Dan solves the problem in a way Nok can act on now, and she immediately hands over her student card. Printing the email is impossible because she is already there, and 'will … last week' mixes tenses.

seats fill up quickly, so go early

Nok replies that she will go straight there, which is a sensible response to advice about arriving early. The other options are illogical or contradict 'starts at ten'.

When did you get here?

Nok answers 'Just now', which is a time expression, so Tee must have asked when she arrived.

it's harder than I expected

ทีเล่าต่อถึงความยาก ทั้งการบรรยายภาษาอังกฤษและการอ่านที่ไม่จบสิ้น จึงต้องเป็น harder than I expected ส่วน How's … treating you?

Tee goes on to describe difficulties: lectures in English and endless reading. Only 'harder than I expected' matches that. 'Treating me to lunch' misreads the idiom 'How's … treating you?', which means 'How is it going?'

most of us improve a lot by the second semester

Tee is encouraging Nok ('Don't let that stop you'), and Nok says she feels better. Only the hopeful option fits that purpose.

Could you show me where the clinic is after lunch?

Tee answers 'Sure' and says the place is on her way to the library, so Nok must have asked to be shown a location.

whether it also covers housing

คุณอนงค์ตอบเรื่องหอพัก แปลว่านกถามเรื่องที่พัก และหลัง I'm not sure ต้องใช้โครงสร้างประโยคบอกเล่า whether it covers ไม่ใช่ does it cover

Ms. Anong answers 'It does' and then talks about the dormitory, so Nok asked about housing. After 'I'm not sure', an embedded question uses statement word order ('whether it covers'), not question order ('does it cover').

they couldn't afford the dormitory on their own

Nok says the scholarship would make a huge difference and Ms. Anong replies that she is exactly who it is for, so Nok must be describing financial need.

and must also write

'However' introduces requirements, and Nok then asks about the essay. So the essay is a second requirement, added with 'and must also'.

It's about your plans for the future.

Nok asks for the topic. The next sentence explains the topic (how she would help her community), so the answer must name a topic, not a length. 'About' here means 'on the subject of'.

Then that should be the heart of your essay.

Nok's goal matches exactly what the essay asks for: helping her home community. Ms. Anong encourages her to build the essay around it.

Is there anywhere to study quietly at night?

Mrs. Pim answers by describing a reading room open until midnight, so Nok asked about a quiet place to study. 'Why is the room so small?' contradicts 'bigger than I imagined'.

end up spending hours

'End up' is followed by a verb in the -ing form: 'end up doing'. The present simple fits because this is a general habit of most students.

they aren't allowed upstairs

'But' signals a limit after a permission: guests may come to the lobby, but not further. Nok then calls the rules reasonable.

Is there someone on duty at night?

Mrs. Pim answers 'Yes, a security guard is on duty all night', which directly answers a question about night-time staff. The gate question contradicts what she said earlier.

you can knock on my door at any hour

She has just said she lives on the ground floor, which is meant to reassure Nok. The logical continuation is that students can come to her at any time.

open

After 'are now', we need an adjective describing the applications. 'Open' fits, and the rest of the email invites people to apply, so 'closed' contradicts it.

whose

The families belong to the students, so we need the possessive relative pronoun 'whose' (students whose families = students and their families).

have received

Since then เชื่อมจุดเริ่มต้นในอดีตมาถึงปัจจุบัน จึงใช้ present perfect have received

'Since then' connects a past starting point to the present, so the present perfect 'have received' is needed.

In addition

The sentence adds another benefit (a mentor) to the list in the previous sentence. 'In addition' adds; 'However' and 'Instead' contrast.

which

After a comma, a non-defining relative clause about a thing (being matched with a mentor) uses 'which'. 'That' cannot follow a comma in this way.

received

Applications do not receive anything; they are received. The shortened passive form is 'applications (which are) received after 30 November'.

hearing

look forward to ใช้ to เป็นบุพบท จึงตามด้วยกริยาเติม -ing คือ hearing

In 'look forward to', 'to' is a preposition, so it is followed by the -ing form: 'look forward to hearing'.

cancelled

Why I Almost Didn't Go จึงต้องเป็น nearly cancelled

The next sentence explains a reason not to go (the ticket was expensive) and the title is 'Why I Almost Didn't Go'. 'Nearly cancelled' fits that meaning.

anyway

Her mother told her to go despite the cost. 'Anyway' at the end of a clause means 'in spite of that'.

had assumed

Before the trip บอกเวลาที่เกิดก่อนอีกเหตุการณ์ในอดีต จึงใช้ past perfect had assumed

'Before the trip' sets a time earlier than another past event, so the past perfect 'had assumed' is correct. She no longer believes it.

but

The two clauses contrast: the first semester was hard, but almost everyone improves.

encouraging

The moment itself gave her hope, so we use the -ing adjective that describes the thing causing the feeling. 'Encouraged' would describe how a person feels.

If

This is a third conditional about an unreal past: 'If I had stayed home, I would never have known.' 'Unless' would reverse the meaning.

Even if

She will keep applying whether or not she wins. 'Even if' introduces a condition that will not change the result.

changed

has already ตามด้วยกริยาช่องที่ 3 เป็น present perfect คือ has already changed

'Has already' is followed by a past participle to form the present perfect: 'has already changed'.

Only a limited number of people can join each tour.

Groups are 'limited to 15 people'. The tours run in the morning, start from the faculty stands and are open to visitors.

restricted

'Limited to 15 people' means no more than 15 people may join, so 'restricted' is the closest meaning.

Why some first-generation students leave university and what helps them stay

Each paragraph develops one idea: who leaves, why they leave, what helps (mentoring), and the debate about costs. The other options are details or topics the passage does not discuss.

Because of money pressures and a sense of not belonging

Paragraph 2 says the main reasons were 'financial and social' and that grades were only slightly lower, which rules out the first distractor.

are the first in their families to go to university

The critics call mentoring 'a cheap answer' and want universities to reduce dormitory and textbook costs first. They do not say mentoring is harmful.

Financial help and friendship play different but important roles.

The scholarship helped the student enter ('through the door'), while a friend helped the student stay. Each did a different job, which matches the researchers' view that both are needed.

Young people visiting the university who are thinking of applying

Dan writes as an Open Day ambassador to people 'standing where I stood' and ends with 'Just come', an invitation to future students.

He thought he was the only one who had not understood it.

He understood about a third and only later learned that his classmates felt the same, so at the time he believed he was alone.

The people who would use it could repair it easily.

The design 'was not the most elegant', but a farmer could repair it with tools from the local market. That practical advantage came from Dan's background.

the fact that Dan learned to ask for help late

'It' points back to the clause just before: 'I learned this late'. His weak first-semester grades are the evidence.
