Finding the main idea

เป้าหมาย: ระบุใจความหลักของย่อหน้าและบทความสั้น แยกออกจากรายละเอียดและตัวอย่าง

ใจความหลัก (main idea) คือสิ่งที่ผู้เขียนต้องการให้ผู้อ่านจำได้ถ้าจำได้เพียงอย่างเดียว ส่วนรายละเอียด ตัวอย่าง และตัวเลข มีไว้เพื่อสนับสนุนใจความนั้น ผู้อ่านที่เก่งจะถามตัวเองหลังอ่านจบว่า “ย่อหน้านี้พยายามบอกอะไร” และตอบได้ในประโยคเดียว

ในบทความภาษาอังกฤษ ใจความหลักมักอยู่ในประโยคแรกของย่อหน้า (topic sentence) แต่บางครั้งอยู่ท้ายย่อหน้าเป็นข้อสรุป วิธีตรวจคือดูว่าประโยคอื่นทุกประโยคช่วยอธิบายประโยคนั้นหรือไม่

ตัวเลือกที่ผิดในข้อสอบใจความหลักมักมีสามแบบ แบบแรกกว้างเกินไปจนครอบคลุมเรื่องที่บทความไม่ได้พูด แบบที่สองแคบเกินไปเพราะเป็นเพียงรายละเอียดหนึ่ง และแบบที่สามพูดถึงคำในบทความแต่บิดความหมาย

Many Thai cities are planting trees along their main roads. Trees provide shade, which lowers street temperatures by up to three degrees in summer. They also absorb dust and noise from traffic. In addition, studies show that people walk more on streets with trees, which improves public health. For these reasons, city planners now see trees as essential infrastructure, not decoration.

Learning a language is often compared to building a house. You cannot add a roof before the walls are standing. In the same way, learners who skip basic grammar often struggle later with complex sentences. However, a house also needs people living in it to be a home. Language, too, only comes alive when you use it to communicate with real people.

Scanning for specific details

เป้าหมาย: กวาดตาหาข้อมูลเฉพาะ เช่น ตัวเลข วันที่ ชื่อ เงื่อนไข โดยไม่ต้องอ่านทุกคำ และระวังตัวเลือกที่ใช้คำเดียวกับบทความแต่ความหมายผิด

การอ่านหารายละเอียด (scanning) ต่างจากการอ่านเพื่อเข้าใจ คือรู้ก่อนว่ากำลังหาอะไร แล้วกวาดตาหาคำสำคัญ เช่น ถ้าคำถามถามเวลา ให้มองหาตัวเลขและ a.m./p.m. ถ้าถามราคา ให้มองหาสกุลเงิน วิธีนี้ช่วยประหยัดเวลาได้มากในการสอบ
